AI-proof your career: amplify your human strengths
In today’s career world, are you afraid of becoming irrelevant?
At a time when AI is disrupting career paths and job roles, it’s natural that so many are wondering where this leaves us. It’s unnerving to see things changing so rapidly, and easy to feel we are being left behind.
I’ve seen people deciding to take early retirement rather than re-imagine their careers.
I’ve also noticed others hanging on for dear life - however much they may dislike their work and however deeply they feel threatened by AI.
Others are learning how AI can release time for the tasks they enjoy most in their day and are enjoying the challenge of reshaping their role, loving the agency this brings.
And there’s another group who are a little like rabbits in the headlights - frozen and confused, not knowing what to do next.
Whether you recognise yourself in any of these camps, there is one indisputable fact: AI is here to stay and we are probably going to be astonished by its future range and capability.
So let’s deal with the reality - and also take back control of what happens in our careers. I believe it’s more important than ever to steer your own ship, because no one else is going to do that for you!
I also believe that where we have an edge over AI is in our very human strengths - however much AI can simulate sympathy, offer easy encouragement, give us a virtual high five, flood us with seemingly endless options - what it can’t do is to read the room, know your organisation like you do, or know which risk is worth taking based on your valuable experience.
AI might have quantity, but never forget that you have human quality.
And this is what I’m suggesting you do right here and now - know what your real human strengths are and lean into them, amplify them, build on them and therefore become indispensable. This is the moment to know yourself better, recognise what you have to offer in very human terms.
Human Strengths
The qualities that make us human are also difficult for AI to replicate. What does this actually look like?
Consider attributes like: judgment, relationship-building, reading the room, emotional
intelligence, innovation, creativity, and organisational knowledge.
Combine these with your experience of leading projects, departments, and people, and you will be identifying your uniquely human value.
Even better when these are fused with at least a basic knowledge of how AI can increase efficiency, and free up time for more business-building activities.
When you recognise what makes up your set of human strengths, you won’t need to fear AI, for it will be automating tasks that free you up for more nuanced, human actions.
How to identify your human strengths
You can get started right now because I’ve developed a free resource to guide you through. Follow the easy steps and you’ll be able to:
Identify your specific human strengths
Know how the best of these combine as your signature human strengths - your USP in today’s world
Create a strengths statement that expresses your signature human strengths with specific illustrations from your experience
Reflect on your past experience to increase this bank of signature strengths which you might want to bring to different contexts
With this CLARITY you will find your confidence growing so that you can scan and recognise new opportunities, while also considering how you can bridge any gaps.

From strengths to strength
Instead of feeling uncertain or threatened by the pace of change, dazzled in the AI headlights, and unable to act, this will be one positive step towards greater security - and a positive way forward.
Remember, what AI and automation cannot offer are your very specific set of human strengths. When you can recognise these, their contribution to your success, to how you have solved problems, managed projects, and led innovation, you will be well placed to stay super relevant in today’s career world.
